The Script

(OK, this is an old article, from the early days of The Script. I wrote it not long after they started to become famous, for TunesOnTheTube.tv.)

Sticking To the Script?

One of the best of the new breed of up and coming bands of late are the Irish trio “The Script.” They first came to my attention through my habit of listening to British radio on the Internet. I find the range of music played on most U.K. stations so much wider than that of the Top 40 format radio stations here in the U.S.A.

They have had several big chart hits in Great Britain and are apparently a very good touring band, although I have yet to see them play live myself. It then occurred to me that the song being played at the start of most recent episodes of “Ghost Whisperer” was “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” by The Script. The words seemed to fit the particular arc of episodes pretty well, and as the song was not written for the show, this was a good and fortunate turn of events for the group who got their song featured on a hit show!

I am hoping this will lead to chart success for the group in the States. The song already mentioned went to number two in the U.K. charts and my personal favorite track of theirs, “Breakeven”, reached number 21. So far the USA charts have remained a blank page for them although I have heard their songs getting some airplay on U.S. stations, and their recent status of opening act for Sir Paul McCartney in New York and Atlanata will surely help them in that aim

Their one, self-titled, album has yielded 5 hits in the U.K. and went to number one in their native Ireland. They have been opening act for “Take That” the hugely successful British group, and have had more of their songs played on episodes of other American TV shows.

The Script are: Danny O’Donoghue, Mark Sheehan and, on drums, Glen Power. The band are from Dublin and were influenced early in their careers by soul and R’n’B artists. Danny recalls as a young boy hearing Stevie Wonder singing and the hairs on the back of his neck standing up. Danny and Mark gained a reputation as writers and producers and even got the chance to do some sessions in Los Angeles where they met some of their childhood heroes. They were joined by Glen, a renowned drummer in the Dublin area and the three of them gelled and The Script was born, with their first single “We Cry” reaching number 13 in the UK charts in 2008.

Let’s hope that The Script go from strength to strength and make it big in the U.S.A.

“Missing” the new show on ABC

For me the first episode of this spy drama was formulaic – high-speed chases, explosions, gun fights and all the usual fast action stuff, but by episode three that had been toned down a lot and we had more intrigue and mystery and I began to warm to the series. Starring Ashley Judd and the British actor Sean Bean (why do all the lead roles in American series go to the Brits?) the story revolves around the kidnapping of Ashley Judd’s character’s son Michael. ‘Becca Winstone’ (Judd’s character) is ex-CIA, a top operative, whose husband (Bean) had been killed by a bomb ten years ago. Since then she has been out of the game, but apparently has lost none of her hand-to-hand fighting skills as she fights off assassin after murderous thug. By episode four, which we have just seen tonight, there have been twists and turns, betrayals and all sorts of interesting stuff, which has hooked me enough to keep on watching…..

Skylar Grey

Skylar Grey has a superb voice. Having co-written and sung the beautiful opening lines on “Coming Home” by Diddy and Dirty Money, and featured on  “I Need A Doctor” with Dr. Dre, she is also a huge talent in her own right. This compilation The Buried Sessions Of Skylar Grey showcases her voice on three superb recordings. Her own version of  Love The Way You Lie is among my favorite tracks of the last few years. Take a listen below…..

“Skylar Grey” is a stage name. The singer’s real name is Holly Brook Hafermann and she was born in Wisconsin in 1986. She performed in her early years under the stage name “Holly Brook” but changed to Skylar Grey. Asked why she chose that name she replied “it represents the unknowns in life. People seem to be afraid of the unknowns, but I’m the complete opposite. I dive into the unknown because I feel like that’s where all your possibilities come from.”

“Awake” – Best New Show on T.V.

Best new show for 2012? Our vote goes to “Awake” starring British actor Jason Isaacs as Detective Michael Britten. Britten and his family were in an horrific car-crash, involving the death of his wife, or maybe his son………for Britten lives TWO lives. In one his wife died but his son survived and lives with him, but when Britten goes to sleep, his next day begins with his wife still alive and his SON dead! In one world Britten is partnered with a black detective. In the other with a young rookie Hispanic detective, Vega, who in the OTHER world is still a uniformed cop. In both worlds he has the same boss, and in each world a different crime to solve, but clues to ON world’s crime keep popping up in the OTHER world. Is he imagining one world, if so, which one? Is there something even more sinister going on? What does his boss really know? And as she’s played by the same actress that played Sophia, the leader of the Aliens in “The Event”, is there something ‘unwordly’ going on? Do I watch too much TV? Yes.

Take a look at this video from the opening episode…
